One Thing I Desire
24/03/03

When you look at the life of King David - the great King of the Old Testament, a man after God's own heart - a man who longed for God. You would discover that he was a man who faced similar challenges we face today. If you read the psalms you would find a man who sorrowed - a man who was despised and a man who faced continuous troubles.

One can only imagine the constant agony he faced not just for the enemies that surrounded him but more so for the great enemy of self he had to deal with. David acknowledged that it was this self life that needed to purged off in order to be cleansed and renewed. We know from scripture of David's great failures but at the same time we discover that his triumphs in God overshadowed those failures. That is why he is still regarded as the great king of Israel.

There is a verse in my opinion written in the Psalms that speaks greatly of a man who greatly desired God:

Psalms 27:4
One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the
days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.

Herein lies the secret to David's heart - desire. Desire is a very powerful word - it is the force that drives the heart. A person will do anything if he desired it badly enough. It can be used for good but more often than not desire drives us to do things we know aren't always for our good. David made this affirmation - I desire of the Lord, in other words he is saying that there is no greater longing of my heart because they are inseparably linked. My desire and my heart drive me to the living God.

The question we need to ask of ourselves is this: Do we have such a desire?

Permit me to share with you these principles on how we can make this desire lead us to Christ - the Rock of all ages:

bullet

Make it your uttermost goal - if you don't have this as your priority your desire will be found lacking - and tragic is the person to not make the Lord one's ultimate desire.

bullet

Search the scriptures - God reveals His heart to those who are committed to His word (the son). The word is given to reveal to us the author and confession of our faith - the Lord Jesus Christ. He is "The WORD".

bullet

Recognise that your life is an opportunity - the fact is that this life that you have today has been given to you. You can waste it in doing things that will not profit you or you can spend it wisely in those things that have eternal value. The choice is yours. and finally,

bullet

refuse to allow anything to distract you - life is full of distractions but the one who is focused on the prize usually gets it and in our case the prize will go out to those who have run the race, finished their course and have kept the faith.

I believe that we need to have a desire such as David had. No matter how difficult our circumstances may be, we must not lose our focus. We need to realise that there is something more to life than meets the eye. The real and ultimate reward is to seek after God and to worship Him in the beauty of His holiness. Amen!
